Despite turning 100 later this month, Wally Howard still presents films three times a week to his movie class at educational charity u3a in London in Belsize Park.
To mark the occasion, he was given an Oscar statuette with the inscription ‘To our very own film star.’
It was presented by u3a chair Richard Arthur who said: “As you enter your second century, we felt what better way to celebrate our very own movie star than to present you with this special Oscar.”
Receiving the statuette Howard said: “It is customary for Hollywood recipients of an Oscar to make an acceptance speech. All I want to say is, thank you Mum and Dad.”
The film buff retired aged 60 after spending his working life in the family furniture manufacturing business in London. A widower with three children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, the long-time movie student has no plans to stop his regular classes, which he has given for over 30 years.
u3a, which meets at the former Hampstead Town Hall on Haverstock Hill, gives semi-retired and retired people the opportunity to develop their interests and learn new skills while making friends. It runs a weekly programme of over 140 classes and activities, some available on Zoom, ranging from art appreciation to Yoga. For details go to www.u3alondon.org.uk or call 020 7692 5440.
