‘How a Brit wrote an Amish Novel’ Sheelagh Aston has written a novel about the Amish community in Pennsylvania. In this talk she takes us through the research this involved for her to write about a different community in a country outside her own experience.

The timetables for the week

The full timetable, the room and Zoom timetables and this Update are available from the U3A Office, in the Common Room and on the lower corridor noticeboard.

Class Notices

As you may have noticed, some classes have already stopped for the summer, others are about to and still others will continue throughout the summer break.
During the month of August, the Summer Programme features an excellent series of talks organised by Barbara Stevens. The talks take place most weekday mornings in room 2.21 – with teas, music and walks planned for other times. Details will be available by direct link in the next Update and you will also be able to download a copy of the programme (without zoom links) from the website throughout July and August.
Meanwhile you may wish to renew your subscription to avoid the Autumn rush – details are repeated at the end of this Update.

Obituaries

We are sad to learn of the death of Leslie Stukins. His sister Jill thoughtfully phoned us to let us know that he died a couple of weeks ago. Leslie was a member of the Drama Group. (Thursday at 10.30 in room 2.21)

Wit and Wisdom

A family was flying back from the USA when a tannoy message urgently requested any doctor on board to identify themself. No one moved. A repeat request for urgent medical help found one gentleman get up and go forward. After he left his seat, an old lady sitting in the aisle seat opposite asked his son, who had been sitting next to him, what sort of a doctor his father was. “A very expensive one,” replied the boy.
