Class

Science: Giants of Physics

Class Details

These are discussions of scientific topics, meant for the interested non-scientist. They are about significant and crucial intellectual developments over the past several hundred years. I will start with five brilliant Hungarians – one of the greatest, Leo Szilard, realised the possibility of nuclear fission which played a crucial role in the development of nuclear weapons. The next concerns the development of scientific enquiry, starting from Boethius and ending with Isaac Newton. In the Middle ages, despite glorifying the Renaissance, the emphasis in the period led to a denigration of scientific developments including the Copernican Revolution.
